Crash! Landen’s Best Movies of 2006

A pretty darn good year for movie audiences. Movies that didn’t quite make my Top 10: Pirate’s Of The Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, The Wind That Shakes The Barley, Over The Hedge (computer animation), Thank You For Smoking; even an Oliver Stone movie (World Trade Center). There were also some quirky films that had flaws but were good like Lucky Number Slevin, Little Miss Sunshine, Wristcutters, The Science Of Sleep, Brick, the French cartoon Renaissance, Borat: Cultural Learnings of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (although that one turned my stomach as much as Slither did), Robert Altman’s (last film?) A Prairie Home Companion, Nacho Libre (Jack Black’s luchadore masterpiece), and even Silent Hill, the greatest of the video game horror movies.
Anyway, here’s what I came up with…
THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND (Bumped)
10 THE FOUNTAIN
9 BABEL
8 THE PRESTIGE
7 STRANGER THAN FICTION
6 APOCALYPTO
5 BLOOD DIAMOND
4 CASINO ROYALE
3 THE DEPARTED
2 PAN’S LABYRINTH
1 CHILDREN OF MEN
It was a tough call between my top 2, but I think Children of Men is pretty close to being a perfect film. There isn’t  a whole lot to gripe about. Overall, I think that’s a pretty good list of films for one year…

I liked Rocky Balboa about the same way as ‘A Scanner Darkly’. I liked it, but it was a little too slow (and had some flaws). Rocky Balboa’s boxing scenes were probably the most realistic of the whole series, but in the Rocky series you’re kind of expecting something ridiculous.

I think you’ll enjoy it. The premise is solid enough to carry through some of the insane and silly parts. Children of Men was great and it was definitely one of the best that year. Just not sure if it was the best.

Also whether its personal bias or not, I loved “Rocky Balboa” and it was one of my favorites of 2006. I might even put it top 15 probably not 10.

I don’t think you can call Children of Men a bad movie, though.

Blood Diamond surprised the hell out of me. I didn’t expect much when I saw it. It’s really a good movie (and I’ve heard worse accents in good movies by great actors. See: Robert Deniro doing a southern accent in Cape Fear.

Robert Altman was a pretty darn good director and even some of his lesser work like PHC is better than other director’s best stuff (Gosford Park is one of my favorite movies).

Haven’t seen Idiocracy, but I’ll check that one out. I like Mike Judge.

I like Children of Men I don’t know if I would have put it at number 1 though. Blood Diamond was good movie for the most part but every time Leo would talk in that terrible accent it would crack me up and take me out of the movie.

Fair play for the Prairie Home Companion nod, I really enjoyed that one. No one seemed to care about it though. But you didn’t give my man Mike Judge his due for “Idiocracy”. Not a perfect movie but probably one of my favorite of that year. It deserves at least an honorable mention. Other than that I can’t argue with you too much on this one.
