End of Crash!: Year Two

Posted in A Few Old, Short Words, Music with tags , , , on May 31, 2011 by Crash! Landen

Yes, I’ve been doing this for two years!

(… sounds of crickets chirping….)

The actual anniversary was this past Saturday, but with bigger ‘real world’ stuff going on I completely  forgot about it. I’ve made over 600 posts (currently with 157 straight daily efforts) in that time on mostly unimportant things like college football, comic books, movies and of course, my art. I intended the blog as a site where I could post my art and now have almost 200 entries devoted to that. I got off track for  a while but I’ve made it a point to keep the art section of my blog fuller than the others.

And in true Gump fashion “That’s all I have to say about that.”

On with year three….

Now in Fabulous Technicolor…

Here’s the color version of the line art I posted yesterday…

Almost Forgot…

To post my daily post. I’m up to #155… And  I do want to keep it going, so… Here’s a drawing I did for a ‘tryout’ for a webcomic… I drew it to be colored (which I’m doing right now), so there isn’t a lot of spot ted blacks in it…

I drew the lineart the old fashioned way… I did the rough that I inked from with the WACOM…

I’ll post the color version, tomorrow.

More Music To Draw By

Posted in Music with tags , on May 29, 2011 by Crash! Landen

Soundtracks make for great music to listen to while scribblin’ drawin’s… I’ve been listening to creepy sounding soundtracks, some of them from Dario Argento movies…. Suspiria is a great creepy film from the 70s. The score by Goblin was pretty distinctive to me, but you can decide for yourself.

Thanks to  for posting…

I’ll remember today as being a dreary sunny day today. How about you?

I tried using Copic pens for the first time. I drew a headshot right at the end of watching Weirdsville for the 4th or 5th time. As the credits rolled I grabbed two of the Copic pens and…

Made a mess… But I was just seeing how the markers took to paper. I didn’t realize you could use the lighter marker to ‘blend’ in the darker one until right towards the end. Does that count as learning something? I don’t think so.

Some people say that if you learn something then it’s a successful day. So maybe this was positive in that (very) small regard. I wonder if I lived to be a hundred and three how much I’ll have actually learned by then, if anything.

Nerdy Music To Draw By

Posted in Music with tags , , on May 27, 2011 by Crash! Landen

I was listening to this earlier along with some other nerdy early 80s sounding electronic music. I’m not sure if the group is #125 and the tune The Quiet Earth or vise versa. Either way, I like it.

It helps to draw with the proper music. Thanks to neros77 for posting on the intertube.

127 Hours (2010) Short Review

Posted in A Few Old, Short Words, Reviews with tags , , , , , on May 26, 2011 by Crash! Landen

Danny Boyle continues to make one great film after another. The fact that his films are so diverse when it comes to content is all the more amazing. He is a tremendously effective storyteller and this is amongst his best films.

It wasn’t nearly as gruesome as I had heard. It IS difficult to make a film where the key moment of the story is one of mutilation even if it is for survival… I dont think I’ve SPOILED anything there, have I? The actual story took place only a few years ago, so I think many know the story already.

This is the true story of Aron Ralston (played by James Franco), an extreme sports enthusiast. His self reliance is such to the extreme that it manifests itself in the story as a character flaw in some ways. The film begins as a typical weekend excursion for Ralston. He mountain bikes. He hikes.  He meets s couple of young girls hiking  and takes them first rock climbing  and then swimming in an underground grotto.

Things quickly turn desperate after he parts ways with the girls and has an unlikely accident involving a boulder balancing in a precarious position.  He finds himself alone,  fighting for survival. He is put in the rare position of having to do something unthinkable to survive or perish.

Boyle manages to sidestep the actual 127 hours of being pinned in one place by inserting the thoughts, regrets and hopes of outdoorsman Ralston. He gives you enough of the idea of the tedium and desperation of the situation while giving the audience a bit of relief. Ralstons solution to the situation is gruesome, but is was sanitized so as to not turn the film into a geek show. I’ve been made to grimace far more with MANY other films.

The most difficult moment in the film, for me, was Ralston’s reaction to what he drinks after he runs out of water. Franco does a marvelous job in this. There are long stretches with minimal dialogue, though. Boyle let the visuals tell the story whenever possible. Many of Ralston’s decisions that he’s wrestling with are spelled out in simple gestures. Ralston was the kind of individual that could get through this. There is much self reflection by the character, but you get the idea right from the start that he knows what he may have to do to escape his predicament. Franco  does a good job with the dark humor and a thinking man who does have a lapse or two when trying to keep things together.

There are obvious metaphorical overtones here that are universal. The story is about things that most people can relate to in some way. Regret… Redemption… Self reflection… An EXTREME example of the power of the human spirit… Boyle uses this to pose the question “How far would you go to see the ones you love again?” His answer is that we all would do what Ralston would…. I don’t know about that. If nothing else it is a celebration of the determination of Aron Ralston to survive his moment of reckoning.

This is a top rate film with Boyle’s usual artfully cinematic eye for visuals and his ear for a great soundtrack. It’s worth seeing even if you’re a little squeamish. It made my Best of 2010 list…

150 and Counting

Posted in A Few Old, Short Words, Crash! Art with tags , , , , , , on May 25, 2011 by Crash! Landen

Today’s post marks the 150th straight daily post on my blog. I updated all of my Best and Worst Movie lists since there are a number of movies that I’ve seen
since I’ve posted these lists that deserved to be in my Top 10s. I think there were changes on at least 22 of them. I still Have to update my Best of the Decades to reflect the new lists, but I’ll have to do that later.
My art category now has more posts than any other (as it was intended to be). I included some random sketches here, mostly unfinished, for various past jobs and other things.

I some new stuff on the way. I’m working on some spec stuff currently and a I have some real world work to do, also. I guess I should get on that … Kung Fu Panda is coming up (priorities) and I still need to see Pirates 4, too (priorities).

I had a brush with greatness recently… Erik Larsen, Savage Dragon creator  responded to one of my random messages… he’s the second Image founder to do that. You can se the exciting exchange below. Okay, it’s only exciting for me, but there it is…

They don’t ‘Follow’ me on Twitter, though. One day…. One… day….

And one more random post of a young artist trying to get work at a comics convention:

Now, I’ll get back to work.

Strange Night

Posted in A Few Old, Short Words on May 23, 2011 by Crash! Landen

I had a weird night. It involved the po-po… I guess I’m the lone witness to a crime. I actually filled out a police report and everything. I was a little nervous and rambled when I filled it out. I won’t get into it here, but the whole incident and my own involvement as a witness was just… odd. Wierd bit of coincidences that I’m not going to get into tonight. Maybe some other time.

I was going to post some other stuff, but I’ll wait until tomorrow. The crime thing has completely thrown me off. Good night. Or good morning. Or whatever.
