Wonder Woman Revamp Art

Posted in A Few Old, Short Words, Crash! Art with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on June 30, 2010 by Crash! Landen

I saw on Twitter that Wonder Woman  was getting an overhaul. Here’s the new look.

I have no idea who the artists is. It must not have been important to the  Comic Book Resources interviewer. In comics, artists aren’t nearly as important as the writer are they?…. ARE THEY?

I guess they’re (or J. Michael Stracynski to be more precise) trying to be ‘edgy’ and ‘darker’ with a character that I don’t think was really created for that. All superheroes don’t have to be ‘edgier’ or ‘darker’. Making her more ‘urban’ seems silly, too. If it were me, I’d shoot for the tone from John Byrne’s run on Superman back in the late 80s, but it’s not me, so they can ruin their characters however they want to ruin them. I’m sure her long time fans will be howling that they’re changing the outfit, but the’ll change it back, when the movie thing is more concrete. They always do.

Anyway, just to join in, I did my own version and I tried to still keep her looking super-hero-ish instead of the ‘urban’ version above with leather jacket and boot spurs (or straps or whatever). Not saying it’s an improvement on what’s above. Just wanted to draw my own version. Here’s the ‘line art’…

I’ve never drawn Wonder Woman before (I don’t think), so this is probably my one and only time for doing so.

Let me know what you think… Next ‘deadline’ I guess will be  Saturday (to stay with the original Thursday deadline). I’ve gotten that a bit confusing haven’t I?

Inside and Outside the lines…

Here is the color version of the monster-type I inked on Saturday night. Colored it mostly on Sunday morning (the wee hours)….

Not happy with it, but on to the next drawing.

Crap… I now realize my deadline should have been Monday. Two days? Yeah.Double crap. I guess it’s a good thing noone’s paying attention…. I’ll keep Thursday as my next deadline. Hopefully I can keep it straight from now on.

We’re Puttin’ The Band Back Together…

It’s a whole lot easier staying up until 5 AM  at my computer coloring drawings with music like this:

And especially this:

Not tired at all.

What the hell. Here’s another.

Monsters and Kittens

Almost didn’t make my bi-nightly post trying to catch the Feral One. He’s running amok I tell you. I fed the little bastard tonight trying to get him close enough, but it didn’t work. He ducked and dodged and after all was said and done, he wiped his face, flipped me the bird and ducked outta’ sight.

Anyway… I just inked something tonight, working over some pencils that I did quite some time ago. Here’s the sketch I worked over.

And here’s the ink version…

And with some really flat color…

I might color it tonight. It’s early yet. I’ll probably end up posting that on the next self imposed deadline: Monday.

Oh, and here’s the cat again…

He (or she) looks innocent enough, but there’s a unparalleled savagery lurking beneath cute exterior. I’m going to try again tomorrow night so say a prayer for me. This is a dangerous beast.

Blue Eyed Devil…

I don’t normally post stuff like this, but… I tried catching a kitten that’s been running around the neighborhood at night with it’s mama. I don’t want the kitten, but I don’t want to see it (or it’s mama) get hit by a car, either. Before today, I was only able to get a glimpse or 2 of it. Tonight… Well, here’s a pic…I managed to get close, but not close enough. Surely, a creature that’s probably less than a month or 2 old can’t continue to outsmart me, can it?

Yeah. probably… With every day that passes it gets smarter, bigger, faster and grows sharper claws while  I… I guess I have a window that’s closing… That sounded ominous. I’ll try again tomorrow. In the meantime, here’s the blog post title in audio form, brought to you by Soul Coughing and someone nice enough to post it on youtube. It’s the demo version, but it’s still great.

Beating The Clock… Rogue Style

Posted in A Few Old, Short Words, Crash! Art with tags , , , , on June 24, 2010 by Crash! Landen

Had another power outage. It was very brief, but it came at a bad time. While I’m trying to post this; a pencil sketch…  A little more finished than what I usually do, but then I don’t usually draw with a pencil. I know. That explains a lot.

It’s my favorite X-Person: Rogue, of course… I darkened her up a little. Also had to piece this together since it was bigger than my scanner… I also make it ‘look better’

when I ink stuff, but this wasn’t too bad I don’t think. Sometimes, you look at what you did a week or so later and it looks awful. This one is still okay for the time being, though…Next deadline: Saturday.

Toy Story 3 Review (4.5 of 5)

Toy Story 3 may be the third best in the series, but there’s no shame in that; this is still probably the best movie I’ve seen at the theater this year (just by a smidgen, though. I loved ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ about as much as this one). The folks at PIXAR once again produce a movie that is of the highest quality in every way. For me, Toy Story 2 exceeded the original and was nothing short of an artistic achievement (as all 3 are). This one just added on to what was already there. It maintained the ‘magic’.

This time Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) and company have reached the point that usually makes for a gloomy offering in a  movie about toys that are no longer have kids to play with them.

Their owner Andy has grown up and the remaining toys (some have fallen by the way over the years) are under threat of being thrown out. But instead of lingering on the sadness of the situation,

Toy Story 3 sidesteps that and turns into a kind of prison break movie for toys. There were also some elements of horror (along with several nods to other films) that I enjoyed.

Along with the regulars [Buzz, Woody, Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head (Don Rickles & Estelle Harris), Hamm (John Ratzenberger), Rex ( Wallace Shawn), Slinky Dog (Blake Clark) and Jessie (Joan Cusack)], there are several great additions. Most of the trailers have featured Barbie (Jodi Benson) & Ken (Michael Keaton).

I guess Mattel (or whoever owns the rights) finally gave in after resisting PIXAR’s advances/plans for the original film. Maybe Barbie sales are down.

Ned Beatty also had a pivotal role in the film as Lotso the Hugging Bear that smells like strawberries. They had their moments throughout, but I also got a kick out of some of the smaller roles.

Kristen Schaal had several great moments in the movie as Trixie, a Toy Triceratops that liked to surf the internet, as did Timothy Dalton as the toy thespian’Mr. Pricklepants’.

Woody and Mr Pricklepants (Hanks and the Daltonator)

And then there is “the Claw” (more carry over from the previous installments). Great stuff. Usually, any more than 2 sequels and you’re pushing your luck, but I hope to see another installment featuring these characters.

The only drawback to the film was the animated short before Toy Story 3. It was called Night & Day and that’s kind of how I view the comparison of the movie & short feature. Sure, it was imaginitive using 2 Shmoo-like animated characters as ‘masks’ or ‘keys’ over CGI background animation, but it wasn’t funny (at least to me) and I could have done without it. I wasn’t quite sure what they were trying to say even when it was sounding irritatingly preachy (towards the end of it). I don’t think they were sure of what they were trying to say, either.

Despite that opening FAIL, I still liked the main feature as much as some of the best PIXAR efforts. I give it 4.5 of 5 and would’ve given it the perfect 5 of 5 if I hadn’t had to sit through the short. It’s worth seeing on the big screen, nonetheless.

Eleventh Hour Sketch

Did this in a hurry. Took under an hour (including the 15 minutes spent in photoslop) and is more of a preliminary sketch (done with a Koh-I-Noor pen and Photoslop tools).. It was a request….

I’ll try to get back to doing the ‘serious’ stuff for my next deadline (Thursday).

Wolverines!… No, wait…

Just posting a sketch tonight. More stuff Tuesday.

“It’s Alive!”

Just finished the color version of the ‘largish monster type’. Had to postpone finishing it, since I had a ‘rain delay’ yesterday. FSU probably could’ve used a rain delay against TCU today. It couldn’t have hurt. But I digress… Here’s a version or 4 of the big monster design.

A ‘dark’ version on white. Has a slightly painted look to it, I think. About as close as I get, anyway.
One that has a little more detailing on white. Not nearly as sinister as the first one.An outline version ‘in the dark’. It’s not ‘realistic’ with an outline, but it is ‘comic books’. Don’t know about you, but I’ve always like the outline thing.

Another with a little more lighting. Probably the one I like the most.

And this is the ‘finished’ one on dark. I originally was going to make him completely ‘black’ (the cartoon black like Superman’s hair… with tinges of blue), but I let it get away from me a little. Either way, I think he looks like he’s ready to rend somebody limb from limb.

On to tomorrow’s deadline…
