This is the inside of my business card. When I worked at a sign shop I got to know a guy that owned his own print shop and since I did so many favors for him, he offered to do me a business card. So the day after he said it I had art for him to print a business card. He gave what I asked and then some (I was supposed to get 1000 and I got over 2500…. which was REALLY nice of him. Thanks Hugh!). I did it really quick and was unhappy with some of my art (my ‘logo’ for instance), but it’s fairly different as far as cards go…. Hugh actually told me that he thought it was the best card they ever produced and I was extremely thrilled with his end of the job…
This is the ‘B-side’ of the card (which I actually asked for Black and White… I’m not smart). The other side is full bright and shiny color. What? The card isn’t the right proportions you say? Well, the card unfolds to the size of 2 cards. I had a front, back, and a middle. This is the ‘inside’ part that is revealed when you unfold the card. I wanted a bigger illustration on the card, so this is what I came up with: the gatefold business card. It’s been done before, I’m sure.
Here it is from start to finish…

I roughed it out with an ink pen and scanned it and added the black in Photoshop.
Then I printed out my rough at the actual card size and inked it… I was doing this as fast as possible, so I only drew one of the hands…. I also got rid of the ‘monster face’ in the background at this point.
Here it is after being scanned and straightened up. I flipped the hand, added an outline and the black background….
I added some greytones at this stage. This took about 10 minutes. It’s easy when you’re just doing ‘tonal’ coloring.
And here’s the finished product, complete with cheese. I have no shame. But anyway, that’s one side of my business card. Can’t say for sure how long this side took me, but the whole card was done in about 4 hours. I’d estimate that this side took about two and a half….
